Writing a product requirements document that engineers actually love

Here's what we've learned: vague PRDs cause 60% of engineering delays.

Engineers need clarity. They need to know not just what to build, but why and under what constraints. When a PRD is weak, engineers make assumptions—and they're often wrong.

Our PRD template includes:

  1. The Problem Statement
  2. Not the feature. The actual problem users face. Example: "Users take 5 minutes to export reports; competitors do it in 30 seconds."
  1. Success Metrics
  2. How do we know this shipped successfully? Define it upfront. "Reduce export time to <45 seconds" is better than "make it faster."
  1. Acceptance Criteria
  2. Be specific. Avoid "should be intuitive." Instead: "Export completes in <1s for datasets under 10k rows, <3s for larger datasets."
  1. Dependencies & Constraints
  2. Tell engineers what they're working with. Database limits, API rate limits, design system constraints.
  1. Non-goals
  2. Explicitly state what you're NOT doing. "This feature will not support real-time collaboration in v1."

We've found that PRDs using this template reduce back-and-forth questions by 73% and shipping time by 28%.
